Wasp vs Bee Checker

Waist, hair, and nest cues to tell wasps from bees.

Educational tool only β€” not medical, pest-control, or safety advice. When unsure, observe from a distance and photograph rather than handle.

Bee

Usually hairier bodies built for pollen. Many nest in cavities or ground tunnels and visit flowers steadily.

  • Noticeable body hair / pollen baskets on some species
  • Waist less extremely pinched than many wasps
  • Often focused on flowers

Wasp

Often smoother and more slender with a pinched waist. Some build paper nests; others hunt insects.

  • Smoother, shinier body on many species
  • Very narrow β€œwasp waist”
  • May show interest in protein foods or nest sites
1. How hairy is the body?
2. Look at the waist between thorax and abdomen.
3. What is it doing?

Hover flies can mimic both. Hair, waist, and wing count (one pair on flies) help β€” when unsure, photograph rather than swat.

FAQ

Are all yellow-and-black insects bees?
No. Many wasps and hover flies share those colors. Hairiness, waist shape, and wing fold at rest are more reliable than color alone.

More precise IDs are on the way

These tools teach the differences. BugScout IDs the insect from a photo on your iPhone.
